FRENCH Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy vowed yesterday to eradicate “Nazi salutes, monkey calls” and attacks on coloured players from soccer stadiums after post-match race rioting by a fascist mob left a fan dead.

Mr Sarkozy, a follower of the Paris-Saint-Germain club, joined French President Jacques Chirac in expressing horror at the violence that spilled out of the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris’s exclusive 16th arrondissement on Thursday night.

In what Le Parisien newspaper called “le cocktail” of racism, anti-semitism and human beastliness, about 100 right-wing extremist fans of PSG, furious after their club lost 4-2 to Tel Aviv, tried to lynch a black plainclothes police officer who was protecting a French Jewish fan of the Israeli team.
